Eyes in the Underground

Monitoring track conditions in London's massive subway system

The London Underground has eyes on its tracks – and on its wheels and its wheel/track interface too. And it’s happening while commuters are travelling on the Tube’s 1000 kms of track during peak hours. While riders might never know it, they certainly are safer for it.

Stemmer Imaging supplied the enclosures for the Automated Track Monitoring System which relies on 104 industrial camera assemblies built around Teledyne DALSA’s high speed Genie Nano cameras. The assemblies are mounted directly to two trains on each line and the system monitors and returns data to allow for maintenance during the tube’s 4-hour nightly closure. Read more here.
